5 Ways to Bring More Natural Light into your Home

Maximising the amount of natural light in your home is one of the key design aspects to consider when remodelling/building a new house. The benefits of natural light are substantial. Not only does it help to improve your mood and health, it also helps you save on electricity costs, and creates an illusion of a larger space, which will increase your house value.

Here are 5 ways you can increase the amount of natural light in your home:

  • Install a skylight

If budget allows, installing a skylight is the best way to add natural light in a room. They admit more than 3 times as much light as a vertical window of the same size, and can be installed easily and quickly in both flat and pitched roofs. Unlike windows, which face a specific cardinal direction, skylights will bring in light  . When properly selected and installed, an energy efficient skylight can help minimise your lighting and heating costs.

  • Use light colour schemes

Using a light colour palette such as cream or white is a more economical way to improve the brightness in a room. Light, cool colours reflect light much better than darker, warm toned colours. Avoid darker, warmer shades, as these will absorb light and instead go for lighter shades such as yellows and neutrals.

  • Rearrange furniture

Make sure your furniture is arranged in a way that does not directly block a window's light stream. Avoid placing furniture such as couches and bookshelves to the sides of windows, as this will block the diagonal light stream.

  • Use mirrors

A mirror can work wonders in a dark room. A large mirror placed opposite a window will reflect the light, creating a brighter space with the utilisation of natural light from the window.

  • Flooring

Use a hard floor with a polished finish such as wooden floorboards or stone. These are great light reflectors. However, if you prefer carpets, choosing lighter toned ones will definitely improve the brightness of your room.
